Studio Lead UI

Bigpoint GmbH, Sep 2011 - Mar 2014

Leading UI across all products and multiple studios with focus on hiring, optimization and user experience with over 10+ artists

As Studio UI Lead, I was responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of all user interface design activities across Bigpoint’s diverse game portfolio. Reporting directly to the Head of Art, I co-led the studio’s central art disciplines—UI, 2D, 3D, and Concept—ensuring consistency, scalability, and quality across genres ranging from core to casual.

While this role marked a significant shift toward organizational leadership and people management, I remained hands-on where needed, contributing directly to high-impact design initiatives and creative problem-solving. Bigpoint’s expansive and ever-evolving product landscape provided the perfect training ground to grow my managerial acumen, design thinking, and cross-functional leadership skills.

Key Contributions:

  • Conducted weekly art reviews and performance evaluations for a team of 14+ UI and 2D artists, fostering skill growth and artistic alignment

  • Led recruitment, onboarding, and mentoring of UI designers, strengthening the design culture and talent pipeline

  • Provided creative and strategic guidance for UI across both live and in-development titles

  • Directed and optimized UI pipelines, documentation, and scalable workflows to improve design efficiency and delivery quality

  • Developed and maintained UI best practices, style templates, and training formats to support internal upskilling

  • Partnered closely with management, HR, development, and UX to align creative vision with product strategy and user needs

  • Delivered strategic and training-focused presentations to cross-functional audiences, from product pitches to internal knowledge sharing

  • Advised on and art-directed monetization-related UI (e.g. payment interfaces and in-game boards), ensuring usability and visual clarity

Reflection:
This role solidified my transition from senior contributor to design leader. It taught me how to shape and scale creative culture across departments, support artists in their development, and drive user-centered design at an organizational level—skills that continue to inform my leadership style today.
